The Woodies was my first character design work. The context was the Misterious Forest that Vladimir Propp talks about in his books.
ENVIRONMENT
The woodies live in a fairytale forest, where there are castles, princes and princesses, dragons and more. The deep woods are their home.
BIOLOGY OF A WOODIE
A body is made from wood, since they grow out of trees, hanging down meanwhile they evolve. Once they are completely developed, the only union they have with the brunch he is growing from are his ankles. They are “harvested” by other woodies when ready, so they don’t fall to the ground.
Their body is hollow, and the first thing their companions do is introduce a little firefly larvae inside, since all them perform a simbiosis with them. Their feet are two hard leaves, and two more grow from their front skull. Their legs are similar to tree bark, but their arms are flexible and can be hiden inside their core.
All their aparience is thought for camuflage, especially meanwhile they sleep. They do it during the day, usually hanging from a brunch. Their flexible arms allow them to balance and move smoothly with the wind, and their body leaves make them hard to distinguish by predators.
They don’t eat, but instead get nutrients like plants, from sun and air moisture.
FUNCTION
The woodies are storytellers. They hide and go around the woods look everything. They have special glandules inside their core, around their bark-made body, which react to these stories. If they consume good stories, they are healthy and atletic. If they just look for gossip or bad stories, they get junky and unhealthy.
The firefly inside them illuminates when they wanna share a story, and their eyes work as projector, so everyone can see what they have witnessed.
